Dry Bones Shall Live

Dry Bones Shall Live was originally commissioned by Trio Hann in 1999, under the original title, "Trio" for violin, clarinet and piano. It was premiered by Trio Hann at the Seoul Arts Centre in 1999 and since then has been performed and recorded in Korea, United States and Canada by Trio Hann (Seoul), the Colorado College Faculty Ensemble and Montreal QAT Ensemble. The recording of Trio Hann was released by Sony Classical Label and broadcasted by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) FM Radio.

The piece evoked a mood of "Spring" in it's dynamic and character, mentioned by an audience member after it's premier. While planning the theme of the upcoming "Dry Bones Shall Live" concert, Gideon Kim remembered this comment out his trio, since "Spring" accompanies the vitality, imagined in the words of Ezekiel. He immediately started revising parts of the original piece to better capture the theme of the concert.

He quoted Martin Luther's graceful hymn, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" (Ein Feste Burg) and incorporated it into the original piece. It transformed the conclusion of the piece and brought forth a powerful ending and musical interpretation of the prophesy of Ezekiel, since he believes that the dry bones can only live by Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
